Opening day at Ski Arpa: EPIC!!!
—-thanks guys for my best JULY day ever! You just do not (and can not) expect conditions like this anywhere in July. We ripped waist deep pow in insane terrain all day and barely even had to see our own tracks, much less cross one of them!
I have the luxury of being able to ski all over the world, and although my home is in NYC, A Basin, Colorado, USA, is my home base in the winter. That said, there is a reason that I come back to Ski ARPA Snowcats in Le Valle de Arpa, Chile, every summer: it is an amazing combination of fantastic conditions and dreamlike snow, unbelievable terrain, unparalleled beauty, and Chilean/American hospitality beyond your wildest expectations. Don’t misunderstand, this is full-on rustic, and an absolute backcountry adventure, but Toni is a fantastic host, and has truly created something special here. Toni’s son Anton has grown into being one of the best guides, and like his father, the perfect host, and Anton and his fellow guides, Derek and Chris, are not just impeccably trained and incredibly knowledgeable (and ridiculously gifted skiers), but they are also genuinely great guys.
Anyone can ski Arpa, and they will make sure everyone that makes the trek has a great time (and believe me, it is not an easy place to get to). BUT… if you crave, as I do, a true backcountry, off-piste, extreme experience, ARPA es el ultimo.
AND…. if you want to combine convenience, ease of travel, and even a smidge of luxury into your experience, Brian Pearson, of Santiago Adventures, the ex-pat host-with-the-most in Chile, and his able drivers, the Chile tour operators’ creme-de-la- creme, will get you there safely and cater to your every need [if you need that], put you in the warmth and comfort and Chilean hospitality [and delicious food!] of the relatively nearby refugio, Casa St. Regis, in Los Andes, and then you can truly focus on the task at hand: off piste, backcountry, adrenaline-pumping, pow-pounding, skiing adventure unlike any other in the world.
